12mo (145x90 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 200 [recte 198], [4 blank] pp. Pagination jump between pp. 22 and 25. Title page printed in red and black. Modern half leather, morocco lettering piece on spine. From the famous Lindner hunting library (its bookplate and small stamp “Bibliotheca Tiliana”). Some browning, uncut with deckle edges. Rare first and only edition of this treatise entirely devoted to the eel, its nature, habitat, and uses in medicine and gastronomy. An entire chapter is dedicated to its economic aspects, including its qualities as food. The final chapter deals with the folklore surrounding the eel.Paullini was born in Eisenach to a family of merchants and scholars. He studied theology and medicine in Gdańsk, Königsberg, Rostock, Lübeck, Kiel and Copenhagen, was Magister Artium in Wittenberg, and received his MD in Leiden. He became the personal physician of the Prince-Bishop of Munster Christoph Bernhard von Galen and later of the Duke of Brunswick in Wolfenbüttel. In 1685 he was appointed as city doctor in Eisenach. He was regarded as a polymath and corresponded with Leibniz. He was a member of the Fruitbearing Society, Pegnesischer Blumenorden and German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. In his long career Paullini wrote 68 books, many of them left unpublished. He died in 1712 in his hometown.
