## Descrizione accademica e analisi

Oblong folio (ca. 285×380 mm). 48 photographic albumen prints (ca. 150x200 mm), mounted on both sides of 24 card leaves; many captioned and numbered within the image. Contemporary half black leather with brown textured sides, upper cover lettered in gilt. Printed commercial label incorporating the words “Established A.D. 1802” on the front pastedown; patent stamp dated 4 April 1882 along the inner hinges. Some spotting and undulation to the mounts, occasional marks and surface abrasions to the photographs; binding rubbed, particularly at the spine and corners. Provenance: Library of the Missionshaus St. Gabriel, Mödling near Vienna, with institutional stamps. An extensive photographic survey of New York’s waterfront, architecture, transport and public life, bringing together harbour panoramas, shipping along South Street, the Statue of Liberty, and seven consecutive views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Other subjects include Broadway and the Bowery, steam-operated elevated railways, the Produce Exchange, Cooper Union, Grand Central Depot, the Vanderbilt residences, Fifth Avenue hotels, Central Park, High Bridge, Washington Bridge, and the Brighton Pier at Coney Island. The sequence juxtaposes the commercial and industrial city with its fashionable residences and recreational spaces. Two images can be associated with named photographic producers through precise comparisons. South Street and Shipping, New York, no. 102, matches a print in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Société de Géographie collection, bearing the blindstamp of A. Loeffler, Tompkinsville, Staten Island; that comparison print was acquired on 14 June 1893. Skating in Central Park corresponds to the photograph attributed to J. S. Johnston and dated c. 1890 by the New York Historical. The remaining photographs are presently unattributed. The photographs derive from negatives of different dates. Views of St. Patrick’s Cathedral show its spires under construction, consistent with c. 1885-1888, whereas the completed Washington Bridge indicates that the collection could not have been assembled before approximately 1888-1889. An assembly date around 1890 or in the early 1890s is therefore plausible, although no firm upper limit has been established.
