Large folio (582x417 mm). [4]+85+[2 blank] pp. Contemporary half-leather binding, spine with gilt decoration, red shagreen covers, gilt Bourbon coat of arms and title (“Stamperia Reale Conto dell’anno 1838”) on the front panel, gilt frame on both covers (small repairs to the edges and corners of the binding, soiled and stained, minor losses). An excellent copy. An extraordinary manuscript containing, in clear handwriting, the detailed record of the accounts of the Royal Printing House of Naples for the year 1838. It includes records of purchases of paper, typefaces and other printing materials, as well as inventories, lists of printed volumes ranging from the “Collection of Laws” to works of greater “commercial” appeal, and lists of the Kingdom’s various depositories. It also contains records of volumes with imperfections and defects, luxury editions, and regular and special payments to staff.This interesting historical document sheds light on the activities and the production of a major Italian printing house, the Royal Printing House of Naples, established in 1748 following the bequest by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of San Severo, of his private printing press to Charles III. Initially founded to document the archaeological discoveries at Herculaneum, it became one of the most prestigious printing centers in Europe.
